2019 Little-Neck Douglaston Memorial Day Parade
On Sunday, residents attended a parade in College Point, and on Monday a ceremony and parade was held in Whitestone, followed by the large Little Neck-Douglaston Memorial Day Parade on Northern Boulevard.
It was a perfect day to mark the occasion, which State Senator John Liu noted in his remarks in Whitestone.
“It’s a great day to go the beach,” he told the crowd. “But you chose to come here and remember the individuals that we owe our lives and livelihood to.”
John McHugh, Sr., served as grand marshal of the Whitestone parade. He served in World War II and stormed the beach on D-Day. He was a fitting choice as the country marks the 75th anniversary of the war-turning battle.
Assemblyman Ed Braunstein’s father went to high school with McHugh’s son, and the assemblyman said as a child he heard the details of McHugh’s military service.
“While I was growing up, in my household the example of service and sacrifice was always John McHugh,” he said.
