An off-duty NYPD detective committed suicide inside a Middle Village home on Monday afternoon, according to reports.

Reports identified the man as second-grade Detective Paul Federico, 53, who hung himself inside his mother’s house on 79th Street. Family members found Federico before 12:30 p.m. that day.

The 29-year veteran was reportedly placed on modified duty and had his guns taken away from him over a personal issue. He was assigned to the police commissioner’s liaison unit.

“Today, we tragically lost another member of the NYPD family,” Police Commissioner Dermot Shea tweeted. “Please, if you or anyone you know is going through something, help is available.”

Police shut down the block on 79th Street between 58th Avenue and Queens Midtown Expressway for the investigation. According to reports, he did not leave behind a note.

Federico’s death is the first NYPD officer suicide in 2020. Last year, 10 police officers took their lives, alarming city and department officials.

“Heartbreaking news out of Queens,” Mayor Bill de Blasio tweeted on Monday. “Please keep the family of this good man as well as his brothers and sisters in the NYPD in your thoughts tonight.”
